Collection
Over 1,000 photographs from the Frank G. Zahn Railroad Photograph Collection documenting Pennsylvania railroads from the 1930s through the 1990s. Zahn (1925-2008) was a lifelong railroad enthusiast whose photographs chronicle the transition from steam to diesel and electric power across the Pennsylvania Railroad, Reading Railroad, and their successors.
About This Collection
Zahn's photographs are a key primary source for railroad historians, capturing not just locomotives but also stations, yards, bridges, and the industrial landscape of Pennsylvania's rail network. The collection is held by the Special Collections Research Center at Temple University Libraries. On this site, all 1,000 photographs have been analyzed using OpenAI's CLIP vision model to generate visual categories.
